CNY is hard work......what have I committed myself to?

Thursday, February 11, 2010

I told myself (and everyone around me) that I would be ambitious and daring and bold for CNY. I'm planning to put together some treats in a bag for a couple of people I/we need to show gratitude to. So why not go all out and make everything from scratch? Yeah. It all looked so easy on paper and in my mind. lol. These last two days, I've embraced my inner auntie (although some people would suggest that my inner auntie likes to make appearances a regular thing) and made....

and the neighbour saga continues.....

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

First of all, sorry about all the ranting and raving about the neighbours but they are kinda sucky and if I don't rant now, I'm gonna keep thinking about it til I drive myself crazy. Feel free to skip this post but if you read it, do we really sound unreasonable?

the young and the old

We got to see our new (first? second? ) cousin today :) She's sooooooooooooooooooo cute!! She's got that chubby asian baby thing going on and her poof of hair could give Donald Trump's (fake? real?) combover a run for its money. She was totally mellow and kept blowing raspberries which was cute in a slobbery way. We didn't get to hold her though since she spent most of the time sleeping :( But it was good to catch up with Mei Hsia and her family. We got to see the new house which has a great back yard and Anya is so much bigger now. I can't believe she's already 5! ...man, I remember when she was this tiny little wriggling bundle. Despite all the pink she wears (I think that might be her mom's doing), that kid is something of a tomboy.

The rest of the day was spent vegging out on the couch with my sis and watching painfully bad sitcoms (to me at least. I'm not a lover of sitcoms). But we did have something interesting happen - the cops knocked on our door a while ago. For a moment, my sis thought the neighbours had set them on us (although why she would think that is beyond me....we weren't home the whole day) and I guess they probably thought we set the cops on them....heh heh. I wish. But no. It turns out that a little old lady with Alzheimers two houses down went missing around 5pm (Charl thought they were talking about Flora for a moment but then was like, noo....we just heard her calling for her cats just now....). Anyway, regardless if it was a little old lady we knew or not, it's the kind of situation where you just go... Uh-oh. That is not good.

i wish we could help out but there isn't anything we can do that the cops aren't already doing. I hope they find her soon cos it's really cold and dark out now and that's kinda sad.

random thoughts on thursday

Hmm. Disney songs are an awesome way to brighten up a day :)

Also, I remembered the happy cow ad they had on tv a few months back and was wondering what had happened. So, google came to the rescue and clued me in.

It was basically an ad featuring "talking" cows from all over the world who were auditioning for a spot as the next real California happy cow (the catch phrase is that 'great cheese comes from happy [Californian] cows') in their search for greener pastures, love and the American dream. Utterly ridiculous but pretty entertaining. Well, apparently thousands of people voted (obviously because with the economy being what it is, loads of Californians have the spare time to vote for the importation of a cow) and while the South Korean cow, Soo, received more than 60, 000 votes, the Canadian cow, Kirsten won. Yay.

Go here to see Kirsten :)

But aside from the udder (haha, sorry that was lame) cow mania (interviews, wallpapers of your fav cow and even the option of buying a painting from California's premier cow painter), they have some pretty good info about buying local milk and cheese. Random but interesting.

Gonna start the cny cooking medley but the list is still pretty tentative. The thing that I'm really excited about making is kuih kapit since I wanna try out my moulds. The only glitch in that plan is that to make em the traditional way, I need charcoal and a grill but it's been raining and whatnot :( Hopefully it stops soon and I can see if making them is really worth the trouble.

Here's to another rainy Thursday.

The continuous rant about the neighbours...

Monday, February 1, 2010

I'm really pissed off with the neighbours right now. We totally thought (prayed, wished, hoped) that they had moved out since we hadn't been hearing very much from them the last few weeks (although my sis says she's heard them) but alas, it is not so. The dude is playing really loud clubbing/heavy metal music that I can hear from the living room (so through two walls and a door). It's so loud that I can hear it from inside the car which is parked on the street. We've talked to them before when it got too loud for too long in the middle of the week (til 4 am on a tuesday night/wed morning) and they said they understood and were ....fairly apologetic at the time.
