ohhhhhh KARMA!

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Man, this week has been pretty malang (in the broadest sense of the word) for me and some of my highschool friends. This bad luck we attribute to karma for making fun of certain people continuously. (It's prolly not karma at all but we like to have a scapegoat for our chronic unluckiness in life and love. We're trying to rehabilitate ourselves and be better people (I swear!!) but we can't help it when they make it soooooo easy. It's an issue of will power - we just don't have enough and can't resist.

Anyway, the karma manifests in different ways for us - some hilarious, some oddly painful and some, downright depressing. lol. It's gotten to be an ongoing phenomena that messes with our lives so much that we've started keeping a weekly score. Whomever "suffers" the worst karma "wins." I think this week's collective total is:

Jon managed to sustain an injury a day. No seriously, he got hurt at least once a day....which is kinda funny cos he's such a wuss about it.

Timun got an infection (I have no idea where and I don't really want to know) and had to work overtime then had to go for some company treasure hunt at 6am in the morning. I'll throw in her working CNY too just cos that kind of suckyness carries over.

Our resident KPC (kay po/ busybody) experienced an allergic reaction after eating expired (!!) abalone. (Seriously, wtf expired abalone?!?!)  Then she caught a cold and fever.

I grated my knuckle (yes, just one) while making lemon cream then proceeded to slice that same finger on the lid of a can while making hummus. Both were bleeders that did not help my culinary endeavors meaning that it took me twice as long to make food and i had to starve for like 3 hours longer than I should have. Then today, I get a creepy fb message from a fairly creepy highschool acquaintance I just added (only cos my other highschool friends added him. shit. should have just left him hanging with the rest of the creepers on the friend request page. and no, that's not mean at all. if they're still in limbo, they can't re-request after you ignore the first one. hah! take that facebook!).

That totally fulfilled the weekly quota of "random creepy message/friending from random creepy guy." Yeah, I have a weekly quota. Because apparently, the only guys who are ballsy enough to inquire about my availability are the ones nobody wants! wtf. seriously, fml. i need to work on this single thing. Especially since I have managed to fall down that magical rabbit hole to end up in a state where it seems like wearing a shirt is optional and people like to randomly strip. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can judge the distance to the beach (or if you're on the right bus heading to the beach) by how much (or little) people are wearing.

Anyway, if I manage to contract tetanus then I win hands down because that would be pretty tragic. If not, then I think KPC deserves to win this week's round cos seriously, EXPIRED ABALONE. 'Nuff said.

what a weekend

Nessie's birthday weekend was awesome :)

the general gathering at 83 proof was good - saw some familiar faces and had to entertain weird new ones (bleh) and nessie was totally right about the bartender being really really hot AND he could make some amazing cocktails that I sampled off the 'mos. yum. Like all drunken nessie gatherings, it was very entertaining to see her totter around the bar and try to stay in her red hoochie mama dress. lol. i think some of the best quotes from that night were:

~ "i'm not going to titty fuck my phone!" ~ when Nessie, worried about losing her phone, refused to keep it in the cleavage between dolce and gabbana because Lilo was gonna be evil and call it while it sat between the ginormous boobies

~ " my dress is three six inch penises long! see, one, two, three!"~ when Van rather loudly hand measured the length of her red hochie mama dress

i'm sure there were more but i really can't remember them. lol.

the indo mee after was really good too, especially when van cooked it and fried an egg drunk and mostly blind at 3am. real talent right there.

day 2 of the nessie extravaganza was fairly mellow in the morning as we wandered around the mission then took like a 15 min nap :) Then it was off to Foreign Cinema where the food was pretty good and terribly expensive - the fried chicken was probably the best entree, the sea bass....not so much, the aprium tart was good and the sexy beast was wonderful - tastes almost like ribena. the movie, a single man, looked interesting. might have to go watch it now. the 'mos all looked really nice and sonny proved that he was not a bad gay by finding a shiney card and great watch for nessie. After dinner drinks and desserts were followed by more drinks and a cheese plate at this wine bar called Heart where there were loads of marina yuppies slummin' it and we sat next to a group of cougars and talked loudly about sex. lol. And to top it all off, the 'mos took my gay bar cherry by bringing me to the castro to dance. it was great since there weren't any guys trying to grossly hump me on the dance floor (biggest pet peeve at a club) but also terribly depressing because a whole bunch of the guys there were just gorgeous ... and totally with another gorgeous guy. sigh. the whole "all the good ones are taken or gay" really rang true here. oh san francisco. meh.

day 3, we woke up to nessie imitating a demented rooster as she squawked about being hungry. it was an interesting way to wake up. Had brunch at Stable which was alright -  the guy at the counter was weird and i totally thought he was gay and flirting with Lyell but he was straight and the other waiter, the real 'mo, had a very very revealing v-neck shirt on.... which revealed waaaaaaaayyy too much chest hair for it being so early in the day and us not having had our first meal yet. all in all, a great ending to a wonderful weekend. i'm going to miss outings like this so much when I leave :(

also, on an unrelated note, char and I went out to look at a car or two today and I randomly got to ride around the block on the back of a harley davidson moterbike. lol. talk about random.

Sometimes, it really just comes down to timing.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Had a great time with Julie and Rachel today catching up and gossiping for hours on end. I think I may have blabed a little too much, I was so excited to see them again. I can't believe we let it go for a year. We definitely need to keep in touch more.

Anyway, we were just leaving Santana Row when Rachel called and said she had a flat. We found her and I offered to change it for her but she has AAA so we just waited with her for the AAA guy. Out of nowhere, a firetruck pulls up and 4 hot firemen get out and offer to help. We told them that we had already called AAA but I guess they really wanted something to do so they started to change the tire. Unfortunately, AAA shows up right about then and the firemen leave (looking fairly put out at having their rescue attempt interrupted).....

So yeah, it's all about the timing. The firemen should have driven by before she called AAA. It would have worked out much better for us that way - the perfect end to a great day :D lol.

Queena, this made me think of you and your love of firemen. My friends and I agree, they're hot.

And another one bites the dust....

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

So, just found out another high school classmate of mine got hitched. O.o  Congrats man!

And the first one to get married has a child now. Again, O.o

Is there some biological clock out there that's ticking and I'm just not aware of it?

The friend who alerted me to this change in status for our mutual childhood compadre asked me to hook him up if he ever came to the states when i jokingly asked him when he was going to settle down. I mentally went through my American friend list, then scrolled through my facebook friend list to double check said list and the reality of it all is........ I don't have many friends who are straight and single and looking to settle down. I figure about 70-80% of my friends are cute gay boys who would be perfect, except for the part that they don't date girls, or lesbians. This means we're both out of luck. (and people ask me why I'm single.....) Friends have been suggesting match.com and what not. But I'm not that desperate. yet. or ever.

LOL. I basically told him that I could hook him up with lesbians but my straight, single asian girl collection is limited. And like the (arrogant) straight male he is (who has read and practiced the wisdom of "the Game"), he proclaims that lesbians are okay; he's never tried one but he thinks he can turn 'em. LOL. OH Jon... somewhere out there, there are women who want to beat you up.

girl's day out - SF

Thursday, April 15, 2010

So, meeting up with the girls in SF the other day was awesome!! As usual, we were late and the queen got misdirected. lol. But lunch was great as was hanging out after. Best of all, the SEA travel plans are coming together nicely!!

We'll see how this first trip goes. if it works out well, it's gonna have to be made into an annual thing. yup. Do you hear that girls? Somehow, we'll have to make sure it becomes an ongoing adventure no matter where we end up :)

Man, I wish we could meet up more often.....makes me miss those carefree college days. I didn't realize it before, but I really really miss having a bunch of girl friends to hang out with.

What a way to start the new year

Friday, January 15, 2010

Well, it's two weeks into the new year and I can't say that it hasn't been interesting.

Despite the unexpected death of our grandpa just after Christmas, we managed to get to Van's in SF for New Year's since Wen was visiting and they wanted to go somewhere that was not suburbia. It was tons of fun with fun 'gay boy approved' music (I don't care what that weird straight boy said. Pop is the way to go :D), dancing, booze, hookah, the prerequisite shady Russian dudes and best of all, GREAT FRIENDS to share it all with. I've never actually partied with my sis so it was fun! The rest of the week was spent taking Wen around and running errands up.

Grandpa's funeral was last week on the 8th and was pretty quick and simple. A kind of mishmash where East meets West. My aunt came in from Texas and made us ferry her around to take care of all the details. We were honestly kinda peeved that she made us run around and all that since everything was pretty much take care of. Said she didn't want us to feel left out. Our response? We would have LOVED it if she just took over and we didn't have to keep going up to Marin. Didn't tell her that, of course (good little asian kids that we are). but our dad agreed with her (and she wouldn't take no for an answer)so, my sis and I dropped Merv off at work at 5am and drove up to Marin, spending a good part of it napping in the car before we had to meet them at 9am. Okay, enough with the ranting and onto the funeral.

It was a dank and slightly miserable day - equal parts fog and drizzle. We went to the funeral home first for our private family goodbyes then Merv (Charl and I volunteered his services since he wasn't able to be there for the family bonding moments we had with our aunt) lit the incense stick and asked grandpa's spirit to follow us to the cemetery.

Got everything set up for the viewing in the chapel and when all the usual suspects showed up (apparently I was the only one who didn't notice Uncle Ray's bling shoes), we got things started. My aunt went up and gave a little speech; mostly to thank people for coming and helping grandpa when he was alive. My dad was texting us his speech (he couldn't email/fax it for some reason)and I got a nasty look + reprimand from Jeannette since it looked like I was fooling around in the back. Seriously?!? I would have loved to smack her but settled on a nasty look back. Grrr. I had to appreciate the irony of the situation though. Jeannette giving me a lesson on decorum. Hah! Whatever. Anyway, I went up to make dad's speech and the phone rings. Oh dad. It was embarrassing and funny at the same time. I asked him if he wanted to be put on speaker phone but he said no so I read his speech out. I thought it was touching since it was more of an eulogy and was somewhat wistful. I added in my two cents on behalf of the grandkids then asked if anyone else wanted to speak. Uncle ray, unable to resist, went up to the podium and put in his two cents as well. It was kinda funny and at some point he lost me but at least he tried.

The procession then moved to the gravesite where those big red chinese candles and joss sticks were lit and hell money (including prints of a thousand usd) were burnt as the casket was lowered. Carnations were thrown in and that was that. Like I said, an interesting mix of East and West.

I guess the best thing that came out of a crappy thing like a funeral is that family comes together, no matter how much they dislike or are indifferent to each other. It's sad that grandpa passed away but we have managed to reconnect with the various family members.

It's mellowed the old people out a little bit to realize how entirely mortal they are. The grudges seem to have been pushed out of the way a little and I think we're back in the family loop now. Maybe. The crazy aunt doesn't seem so bad anymore, just a little lonely and I just realized how much my dad has changed in the last few years. We also went out for drinks with some of our distant cousins and got to know them better which is awesome.

The madness that is December

Sunday, December 27, 2009

Hmm. It's been awhile but my comp wouldn't let me access my account, something about cookies and java and whatever. Who knows what it's trying to tell me, I don't. But I just got a new computer, (well, second hand from my sister's Singaporean boss but who cares because it costs me $350! and is barely a year old! and it has wireless internet access and did I mention $350?!?) so, updates galore!

i saw boobies! and my professor. But not together!

Saturday, November 21, 2009

Van's debut in the world of burlesque was interesting. I have to admit that I didn't really get to see most of it since I was trying to make sure I got it all on video but after reviewing the vid, I think it's hilarious :) There was stripping, boobies, feather boas, tassels, overeager co-performers, great hair and a close call when she nearly tipped over taking the panties off. haha. it was brilliant! I can't wait for the solo. Seriously, burlesque was made for this girl. As for me, the classes sound tempting but I don't think I'd have the balls for it; I'll stick with bellydancing, thank you very much.

I also managed to track down a professor of mine for reccomendation letters and advice. I was super worried about it since one of my applications is due in about a month and I hadn't heard back from her. To my relief, it wasn't because she hates me (which scares me since she may look like a sweet little old grannie but I know that she is/can be a fierce alpha female with slightly evil tendencies if crossed). As it turns out, it was all a misunderstanding - she put it in her 'recs to write' folder but forgot to reply to my email and set up an appointment. I ended up waiting a reeeaaaaallly long time to see her but it was worth it since I managed to get her undivided attention for an hour and a half and almost everything is squared away now. Man, I have never ever met with a professor for that long. And to my utter surprise, I was super comfortable talking to her the entire time. Which is a good thing since I am pretty much terrified of her and am always surprised by the fact that she even recognizes me. Haha.

My sis left for NY today to spend the week with some friends before they graduate and go home. Not fair. *looks wistful* I wanna see the east coast too! I made her cookies to take on the flight (yes, I am an auntie) and even though I know she'll give me sad, disappointed looks for making yummy things when she's not here, I'm itching to bake something, anything! Especially with thanksgiving approaching soon. We'll see what happens.
