When life is good in too many locations...

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

The week started off with a great dinner in Berkeley - good food, great (and enlightening) conversation and much laughter. Then up to Berkeley again today (it's like I never left, I've been up so often) for SEA trip planning, good food and lots and lots of laughter. Like I said, life is awesome!

But!

I just found out that back home, the boys and girls of the RSC Dingoes get to meet THE ALL BLACKS tomorrow!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!! AAAAAAaaahhhhhh! They're meeting all 60 of the World XV including Rugby legends Jonah Lomu, Andrew Mehrtens, Carlos Spencer,  Greg Somerville, Byron Kelleher and Reuben Thorne!!! OMG! And it's not one of those crappy meet the fans kinda thing - they get to meet them for DRINKS at a pub in Damansara!!! Oh man. So jealous!

Seriously. Life is good right now. But it seems to be pretty good back home too!! Why can't I be in two places at once?

p.s. making prawn noodle stock and there are cats lined up outside the window :)

Seriously, Lilah is so cute in that chubby asian baby way.....She totally made me want a baby or pester charl for one....at least while I held her....when I gave her back, the ovaries stopped working overtime, rational thinking returned and reality set in - maybe I just wanna borrow her for a couple of cuddles instead :)

Merv sadly doesn't know what to do with unsuspecting babies.

Charl, contemplating babies??

Aaaahh, SO SMALL AND CUTE! I want one tooooooooooo....but only on loan.

today....was okay. woke up really grouchy for some unknown reason.... but went used car shopping with charl. that was fun! .....not. four used car dealerships later, i think we're better off getting a car off craigslist than from the lots. eurgh.

but to make the day even better......

I spent 20 mins trying to plunge a toilet that is stuck for no reason. really. all I got was some nasty air..... so why the hell is it even stuck?!?!

ARGH!! seriously. Charl needs to call me back ASAP so I can get the landlord's number so I can get him to call the handyman. In the mean time, google has absolutely failed me :(

So yeah, this is how I'm spending my saturday night....quality time with my friends the toilet and plunger. Lovely.

Fanime is over! yay! The rest of the con was not as mellow as Friday night and that sucked but overall, it was a pretty mellow con compared to last year. Not sure if I'll be back next year but if Charl is graduating, I might make it.

The bbq at Henri's was great too. I'm glad we got to see them and Mei-Hsia's fam too. The littlest Lin is sooooooooooo cute! ~ mellow and very wriggly :) And Anya is a spunky, energetic handful, as usual. I really can't believe she's already 5 and the baby is now 7 months. Time really does fly. Man, I feel old-ish.

sleep deprived but loving it :)

Saturday, May 29, 2010

wow. longest commute ever. took me 2 and a half hours to get back to San Jose from Berkeley O.o I need to remember that the bus route is longer on the weekends. Gah. Anyhow, lunch with Van and Vaish was good - great day, awesome patio spot and delicious food; La Note always delivers :) I'm glad I made it even with the horrible commute both ways. I hope everything goes well for Vaish in LA but I'm not envious at all....I have never wanted nor will I ever want to live there...the smog in the valley just kills me :(

It's back to the con in a bit. Last night was pretty damn mellow for a Friday night at con. Like really mellow. No one playing with fire, no drunken hockey team and no dumb ass underaged girls tempting perverts by going up deserted stairwells in short skirts at 3 am in the morning. I do have to say tho, we've got a lot of newbies and while it means good things like shorter hours and what not, it sort of annoyed me. We had too much traffic on the radio, there was a surprising lack of common sense some times and our newly acquired lounge was a pig sty. So gross. I totally left passive aggressive notes about cleanliness. LOL. I also think I may have gotten hit on by a closeted gay (maybe bi?) guy who insists that he is comfortable with his sexuality or a really, really, really awkward straight anime nerd. Whatever it was, it was 3am and I could not be bothered to figure it out (and I totally zoned out on him about 5 mins in). Surprisingly, there were a couple of hot guys....except they came attached to some very fierce and vampy asian girls...sigh, go figure.

Hopefully the rest of the con will be as mellow as it was last night :)

p.s: Once again, the neighbours are asses. The fight last night brought 4 cop cars to our front door and it started up again at 8am!! Was tempted to ask one of the cops to drop me off downtown....because seriously, their lame ass domestic disturbance did not need 4 cop cars. However, the walk through dodgy downtown san jose last night was wonderful...in a dodgy sort of way - 25 badly lit blocks and I never got harassed once. Awesome :)

and the nerd fest begins....

Friday, May 28, 2010

lol. Fanime is back! which means I'm a gonna go staff there now. Yes, it's an anime conference; yes, I'm a nerd. But really, I mostly go to see my friends......and because the dumb asses that we have to run after are hilarious in their own way. Con security would be a lot easier to handle if people used what little common sense that have. Staffing at con is pretty miserable in it's own way but it helps that I'm established enough that I can just walk in on my own schedule. Sometimes, starting with the people who are now in charge brings perks - they deal with all the political crap and I'm allowed to just hang out with friends and do whatever :D

So now, I'm gonna walk like 20 blocks though dodgy downtown San Jose (and leave the stupid neighbours who are slamming doors and breaking crockery) to go stop up-skirt perverts and drunk otakus from creating havoc at an anime convention for the next four days. I might as well try to stop world hunger and the wars while I'm at it, I'd probably have a better chance....why did i sign up again?? wish me luck!

when habits subtly sneak up on me...

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Okay, I've randomly just realized that I've developed a pottymouth. I mean, I guess I've known for a while but I hadn't realized how bad (in my opinion) I've gotten. I'm not entirely bad to the point of cussing like a sailor but I've noticed that I use expletives a lot in everyday conversations and I usually only realize I've used them after they've rolled off my tongue so effortlessly and I mentally cringe at having cussed without reason.

It's a little ironic.

I've always been fairly proper and very conscious about these things and very disproving (I like to do the passive-aggressive glare thing) when pottymouths were in my vicinity or around kids. Heck, I didn't learn the F-bomb until I was 15 or 16! And now, I'm dropping them in everyday conversations like they're going out of style. It's not attractive.

It used to be that I was this polite little asian kid but now, it's like the filter between my mouth and brain have developed some great big holes. It's probably cos there aren't any little old asian ladies who will randomly scold people for using crass language since everyone cusses here anyway. lol. I've only developed it in the last few years and it really isn't all that bad (I suppose it can be considered mild) but it is driving the prim and proper miss in me suitably crazy for having developed the habit in the first place. Oh man, I'm gonna have to relearn the finer points of self censorship and consciously practice it like crazy or something.

I do have to wonder where I picked it up from (Marin? College? Europe? TV?). New mid-year resolution: stop cussing so much!!

first hectic weekend in forever and I'm loving it!

Monday, May 24, 2010

This weekend was like a blast from the past. lol. Totally did the college student thing and realized how much I miss it.

Started the weekend with a somewhat chill Friday night in SF. Driving up with JK, we realized that our dads went to the SAME highschool and were probably there around the same time. o.O Man, what a coincidence. But then again, KL is really quite small and MBS is a pretty popular school to attend. But still, small world, eh? Now we're gonna go bug our dads to see if they knew each other......I think it would be hilarious and probably very, very awkward to meet JK's dad if they have bad blood between them....like if one of them bullied the other or something. lol.

Met Van's new roommate. Clingy and needy does not even begin to describe this girl. Poor Van and Susan....this one will drive them up the wall. She's nice and pretty I guess, in a fairly generic blond way and she immediately reminded me of sorority girls during rush. I suppose she's new to town and naive but the girl needs hobbies. All I can say is, good luck ladies and remember, it's hard (but not entirely impossible) to throw a "meet the new roommate" party if the roommate moves out before the party.

Vaish's thing at the W hotel was a little bit of a bust which was both a relief and an annoyance. On one hand, we (mainly meaning Van) would not have to endure being mistaken for an escort in the hotel lobby as we head for the pretentious XYZ (if that happened to me, my contingency plan was to hide behind Van and let the magical double D power of Dolce & Gabbana distract the out of town CEOs looking for a good time :D) AND we wouldn't have to pay outrageous prices for drinks. On the other hand, we ended up horribly overdressed at O'Brien's; the type of overdressed where everyone looks at you and thinks "douche" (according to Van) or thinks that you're a Marina girl with a bad sense of direction. lol. I solved my problem by keeping my coat on over my little black dress while Van had no issues with being overdressed and being hit on. lol. Sigh, sometimes I wish I had her confidence. It's times like this when I wonder if I'm missing out on something by not being inclined to meet or pick guys up at bars. Regardless, between the few of us (mostly Van) and the cute, awesome bartender, we got the birthday girl drunk. Mission accomplished :) Too bad Van's eye fuck buddy didn't meet standards in person...but the whole process was an interesting (and educational) experience to watch. If there is a female version of "The Game" published, I definitely need a copy because I obviously do not have a clue as to how it works.

Van, do you like how much I've referenced you in regards to this one night? lol. Can anyone tell that the bar/club scene is really not my thing??

Anyway, had a great time with Van (as always) as we giggled and warbled '90's love songs into the wee hours of the morning (and probably kept the new roommate and her guest up). Totally brings back the nostalgia of college days gone by. Man, we are SO easily pleased :)

Saturday was a satisfying rush of used book sales all over the south bay. I absolutely love the Friends of the Library book sales!! Wish I could be here for the huge one at Fort Mason in Sept. I'm one of those kids you can leave in a library or bookstore (or supermarket) for a couple of hours and I'd be pleased as punch. Dropped by for a joint birthday do later that night and caught up with a whole bunch of people I've not seen in about a year. And had some kick ass brownies.....they were so good, half a pan's worth came home with me :)

Apparently, it's a weekend of reunions. Saw Rachel one last time and met up with a bunch of ppl in Berkeley for coffee (ah, lounging around in Strada and cutting through campus) and an early dinner. Wonderful company on a really nice day. What more could I ask for?? Apparently, a second dinner with the sibs + Han at that Hong Kong restaurant in Newark. So full. But so very satisfied with life right now :)

Seriously, it was an awesome weekend!

suddenly popular, but not really

It's really kinda ridiculous.

Had another job offer to go to Utah immediately for a month. I know it's getting to summer and CRM picks up but why can't I find anything here in the bay area? it drives me a little crazy that all these jobs are coming one after the other now when before there wasn't anything and yet, I'm still unemployed because I don't have the time or inclination to take an out of state assignment. I totally wish I could go make some money but I'd rather catch up with people which brings me to my other point. It may be that people are finally free now that school is out or that people feel like they have to meet up since I'm leaving but I've gone from being a hermit in the living room to being out most of the week lately. Apart from the fact that my piggy bank is being hit hard, i'm not complaining; it's nice to meet up with folks but it does feel rather rushed, like I have to cram everything into the remaining weeks. Of which I have about 5 left. Man, time does fly. Urp. So much to do, so little time! I need to actually start crossing things off my list instead of adding to it.

Sometimes, it really just comes down to timing.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Had a great time with Julie and Rachel today catching up and gossiping for hours on end. I think I may have blabed a little too much, I was so excited to see them again. I can't believe we let it go for a year. We definitely need to keep in touch more.

Anyway, we were just leaving Santana Row when Rachel called and said she had a flat. We found her and I offered to change it for her but she has AAA so we just waited with her for the AAA guy. Out of nowhere, a firetruck pulls up and 4 hot firemen get out and offer to help. We told them that we had already called AAA but I guess they really wanted something to do so they started to change the tire. Unfortunately, AAA shows up right about then and the firemen leave (looking fairly put out at having their rescue attempt interrupted).....

So yeah, it's all about the timing. The firemen should have driven by before she called AAA. It would have worked out much better for us that way - the perfect end to a great day :D lol.

Queena, this made me think of you and your love of firemen. My friends and I agree, they're hot.

Life

Friday, May 14, 2010

I just got a job offer in LA and a possible job offer in June up here in the Bay Area.

Seriously?!?

WTH?!?

Why does life keep offering me all these tempting opportunities when I'm back on track and I have less than a month and a half left here?!?!?!?!

I've been UNEMPLOYED for the last FIVE MONTHS!!! Where the heck were those opportunities then?!?

Aaaaaaaahhhhh!! sometimes life plays some fairly crappy jokes on me.

Also, my sis just left for a banquet for her business association and her friend came to pick her up. I felt like I should have faked some tears and taken pictures, it was so much like prom.....lol. However, they're only good friends and he's not her type and she told me off before I could get the camera. Note to self: Keep camera on hand for times like this.

I want my old job back!

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

So, that job from craigslist? I'mma wondering if it's worth it; pretending to be perky and outgoing for hours on end is tiring. Not even 1 day in and some of my coworkers annoy me......and made me cringe several times. Also, I'm not sure but I think I may have gotten hit on while handing out "free" boxes. urgh. Sigh, craigslist...why? What new lows, right? San Jose can be so damn weird. seriously. Charl, I'm sorry for not believing you before. You're totally right.

Please, someone let me go back to digging holes for money.

huh

Monday, May 10, 2010

Huh. I was up before 2pm today for the first time in.......a long time. Why? Because I got a job through craigslist that'll last for the week (Yes, I am that desperate to be doing something, anything and get paid for it). Huh. I can't believe I'm going to be waking up early in the morning for the next few days...it's kinda surreal. Which just means that I've been unemployed and bumming for waaaaaaay too long.

An offer just came in to do some fieldwork in Cancun for the next two months.....I really want to go. Especially since everything is comped except for the flight. I wish I had the money and didn't have to tie up loose ends here in California. This sucks. When I'm kicking it for months on end, nothing happens but the minute I have plans, a world of opportunities opens up. Sigh. Story of my life.

Anyone wanna fly me to Cancun??
