not ded. really.

like the title says, i'm not dead. just really really busy. I don't mind school all that much but grad school definitely has different expectations. I've seriously never worked this hard on assignments/school in my life (and i'm a slacker compared to some of my peers here :/ ) I've actually been writing on the blog but not posting since I haven't gotten around to editing and honestly, you don't want to read any of the crap i spew without at least one edit. lol. The things I say and think when I don't use my (occasionally useless) filter.....well, I think Ron summed it up nicely on fb a few weeks back "I love Charm, she is so sane and yet insane. She's the quiet girl who's having kinky sex..." hahaha....gawd, this cracks me up so much and has stuck with me since Van told me about it.....mostly because it's so true and is pretty astute coming from someone who only knows me moderately well. it kinda makes me wonder what other ppl think of me....hmmm. who knows. anyway, long story short:

not ded yet. will post once grad school takes a break from kicking my ass over the hols. I hate finals. fml.

I went out into the crazy jungle that is the Lyon Arboretum in Manoa Valley on sat for my field mapping class. I knew there'd be mozzies so i came prepared.

Apparently, I wasn't prepared enough.

My left hand has 21 bites up to my wrist and the right is marginally better with about 12 and I think I got bitten 7 times over my right eyebrow......balls. They're itchy as heck and it looks like i've got some strange disease.

Also, I picked up a printer at a garage sale.....and it took me about half the day to get it working with my computer.....lol. special.

In other news, despite being fed and watered regularly, I've been perpetually hungry in my room since Sunday. Why?? Erm...I picked up a couple of pandan leaves from some random pandan plant in the jungle mostly just cos I could/the aunty in me couldn't resist!...and I have a tendency to eat things off trees/plants whenever possible...um, yeah....Anyway, depending on how hungry i am, my room smells like pandan jelly or nasi lemak.....or a combination of pandan, peach and banana......don't ask...i don't even know....

getting settled in

Thursday, September 2, 2010

It's been about a week and a half since I got here. Slowly getting settled in but this grad school in Hawaii thing...... it doesn't look too bad :)

Found a place to stay. It's probably the most rent I've ever paid (because I'm super cheap and used to willingly live in sketchy/dinky little places) but for the price i'm paying, it's waaaay bigger and cheaper than prollly 90% of housing offered on craigslist in honolulu (and other places I've lived in). Plus, the landlord is nice and there aren't a lot of strict rules. I've got 7 housemates...which is a lot but definitely less than the 39 girls I lived with in my co-op so it's not too bad. Also, I managed to talk my landlord into giving me a discount in exchange for helping to "manage" the place because I'm apparently a "responsible" grad student. Hahahahaha.....the wonders of putting the word "graduate" in front of "student"....man, should have done that sooner....like years ago...at Cal... What's great about the deal is that I really only have to make sure the chores get done, make sure the trash goes out and complain to him if the other housemates get too noisy or dirty. Seriously?!? I'd do that anyway but if it means a Ben Franklin gets taken out of my rent, I'm not about to tell him that! lol.

Classes started on Monday last week and I've only just sorted it out. Managed to get all the classes I wanted and it's not too bad a load for the first semester. Still have to deal with all the red tape bs which is driving me crazy and sorting through it is very trying but it doesn't seem to be all that bad now that I'm right in the middle of it. I do have to say that the student health center here is much better than Berkeley's (where I've never had a good experience because they charge too much and some of the doctors there are horrible).

Hawai'i is pretty darn amazing but it's definitely a lot more expensive than the mainland. Housing, food and even the bus costs more yet most places only pay about $7-9/hour. How do people live?? Gah! Gotta start looking for a job soon :/ Other than that, Hawai'i is very nice....the people are really friendly and super helpful. The scenery is great too - both the landscape and the people. lol. The only thing is the weather. It's been fairly nice and it is not as hot as I thought it would be due to the breeze but it keeps raining suddenly while the sun is shining and there are barely any clouds in the sky! Crazy!

So, school is on track (including getting the advisor I want), medical clearance should be taken care of by the end of this week, I'm not homeless, rent is miraculously cheap (even by mainland standards), I'm slowly making friends (I think) and chocolate covered macadamia nuts are on sale. Now, I only have to worry about studying - it's a lot harder than it looks (my sister makes it look so easy) and getting a rug big enough to cover the ugly stain on my floor. Apart from that, life is good :)

Here I am Hawaii!

Monday, August 23, 2010

Just got to Hawaii today - cutting it close since school starts tomorrow. Not too happy that I'll have to deal with a whole bunch of admin bs on top of having to look for a place to live. What it basically comes down to is that I have a medical clearance hold on my registration that I didn't find out about until 2 days before arriving here. They want a record of my MMR vacination (which would be no problem if I actually had a copy) and a TB skin test. Problem is, the one I took in Berkeley isn't valid anymore and from past experience, this is gonna be a pain in the ass. I had a BCG shot as a child because that's how third world/developing countries roll. The BCG shot means I'll test positive on the Mantoux skin test (since I have the antibodies) and they will need to take an x-ray to show that I'm negative. So, not only is it going to take a while, it's gonna cost me because I don't have insurance yet.

It's a vicious cycle. I don't have the health clearance, I can't register for classes. I don't register for classes, I can't get my financial aid money. I can't get my financial aid, I can't pay for anything school related including health insurance through the school health care plan. Which brings me back to the fact that it's gonna cost me :( Boo. As if Hawaii isn't expensive enough.

On the bright side, just saw an awesome sunset over Waikiki from my hostel.

On the not so bright side, I'm in a hostel. Which means I need to look for housing but may not be able to do so without my financial aid money. Sigh. This really brings back memories of my time in Berkeley.

Will continue with the Cambodian posts soon!

team plague

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

OMG....someone pls put me out of my misery right now. I don't usually like medication but what I wouldn't give for some right now.

So, fyi, this is a TMI warning.

So, various people have been succumbing to something I like to call team plague. Nobody knows what it is but one by one, we've all been getting it with diff levels of intensity. I've finally fallen victim to it and I think it could either be food poisoning or stomach flu. Either one is not much better than the other, really. Been feeling sick all last night and dinner finally made it's appearance this morning. Why can't food taste good coming back up as it does going down? Yurck. I hate throwing up :( What's worse is that I can't keep anything down and I have to constantly run to the bathroom, not knowing which end I'm going to put to use....if I don't end up using both. Liquid diet, here I come. I can't believe I was insisting on going out to the site this morning (mostly cos I was feeling possessive of my unit. lol).....what a disaster that would have been.

Hopefully this is food poisoning (since stomach flu supposedly lasts longer) and I'll be done with it in a day or two. otherwise, this is going to suck. ahhh, fml.

cats and dogs

Monday, July 26, 2010

It was raining cats and dogs for more of sunday night and it was still raining heavily come monday morning. So, a rain day was declared and people were assigned various tasks - mostly catching up on paperwork, transcribing, cleaning and sorting artifacts, taking pictures of the ceramics, etc. A small group went out to unit 2 where they have the big wedding tent and could therefore work regardless of the weather. I'd say that it sucks to be them but I think I'd rather have gone and done some work than stay behind and do paperwork. Worse, my work was interrupted 2-3 time because someone unplugged me (i took out my computer batter and just plugged into the wall) and i had to reboot and redo things over again since autosave recovery can only do so much :(

it's only 8.30pm but i'm soooooooo sleepy! i've gotten used to the early starts (i even wake up automatically at 5 something am now) and the early nights but i just can't get rid of the panda look. bleh.

week 2 pics and post to come. hopefully the rest of week 3 goes better!

My Life in Ruins: Cambodia ~ week 1

Saturday, July 24, 2010

So you know how you spend like 3 hours trying to upload pictures on an entirely crappy connection then when that little bar is finally fully green it tells you that your upload failed? yeah. So the hundreds of pics I've taken are sitting on my computer until I get back to KL. On the upside, I downloaded picasa and put together a couple of collages because uploading everything one by one on blogger is killer.

Here's week one in Cambodia complete with PICTURES!!! Yay! It actually went through!!

My Life in Ruins: Cambodia ~ the basics

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Hello hello. Internet is pretty spotty so hopefully I can get this up. Oh yeah, facebook apparently doesn't work most times since the IP address switches between Vietnam and Cambodia or something like that. I dunno. Anyway, it's been a week and a half and so far, a really great experience. I recently got a message asking me what the heck I'm doing in Cambodia so until I can get photos up on facebook or up here, here are the basics.

Who:
Me.....and about 10-15 others. There's Mai from Seattle, Jenna from France, Dr. Stark from Hawaii, Shawn from Hawaii, Nick from Sarawak, Marie from the Philippines, Charlotte from Belgium/Vietnam, Noel from Singapore, Jim (Dr.s Stark's husband, also a prof at UH), Mei Mei (Dr. Stark's daughter) and about 4 Cambodian students from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh who are with us on a weekly rotating basis. We also have Rachna who's our APSARA liaison and a whole bunch of workmen who know Cambodian archaeology like the back of their hands. So, on site, I'd say there are about 25+ of us and about 15 of us off site.

Where:
Cambodia, of course. But specifically, we work in the Angkor Wat enclosure and live at the Robert Christie Research Center in Siem Reap. It's a little far from Siem Reap's center but in a town this small, a little far means a 25 min walk or so. It does put us about a stone's throw away from the main entrance to the Angkor Archaeological Park though.

When:
From July 11th to August 10th.

What:
I'm in Cambodia to do field work. The project is part of the Greater Angkor Project (GAP) which is a collaboration between French, Australian and Cambodian researchers. The institutions involved are the University of Sydney, Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient (EFEO) and APSARA Autorite. USyd is the main coordinator which makes sense since GAP is mainly funded by the Australian government via the Australian Research Center. What this means is that they have a really nice research center and some very, very nice (and expensive) toys to play with. It's really a sweet set up.

The professor in charge of this month long dig is Professor Stark from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She's been brought on to the project and this is supposed to be the 1st year of a 5 yr collaboration. If everything works out, she's the prof I'm hoping will take me on and be my adviser this Fall. I don't know how likely it'll be seeing as she already has two new Vietnamese students this yeah but I can always hope, yeah?

Anyway, briefly, our goal this field season is to look for Angkorian/Post-Angkorian deposits in hopes of answering questions related to settlement patterns and the habitation of Angkor Wat. That said, it means we're working directly IN the Angkor Wat enclosure. Totally awesome. Well, it's really hot and all that but how many people can actually say that they excavated in Angkor Wat? Every time I look up, I can see Angkor Wat. I eat lunch under a tree a few hundred meters behind Vishnu's butt in the west gopura and near by one of the libraries along the causeway leading up to the main wat.

I guess that's it for the basics. I'll try to get more up if the internet doesn't crap out on me. And pics will come soon for the same reasons.

Day 1 in Cambodia!!

For some reason, facebook doesn't work at the research center. Hmm. Go figure.

Had to get up at 3.30am to catch my Air Asia flight at the ass crack of dawn. But the LLCT was pretty packed and I was surprised at how everything was open despite the early hour. Hmm. Touched down and had a bit of confusion at immigration (nobody on my flight had the visa forms, only customs) where I got rejected at the counter and was sent wandering until I saw ppl from my flight swarming this one dude for forms.

Anyway, I'm here and it's really, really hot and humid - worse than KL. Met most of the team and they seem pretty nice. Managed to explore Siem Reap a little and visit the market where I bought a hat for $2.50! Awesome. Even so, for a supposedly cheap destination, some things can be surprisingly expensive!

Work starts bright and early tomorrow. Bleh. But we get to put a unit in the Angkor Wat enclosure so that'll be pretty cool :) Still coughing but not so sick anymore. Things are looking better and better. Yay!

Closing one chapter and starting a new one

Saturday, July 10, 2010

wow. it's been a while. sigh, such a slacker.

let's see.....where did i leave off.....

urm, yeah. I basically spent the last two weekends of June in SF bumming with Van and the rest of the weekdays sorting out car issues. The week after her b'dae they had a "daddy issues"/welcome new (crazy) roommate party. It was fun - a total sausage fest and probably their best looking party to date. Seriously, there were very few mingers.....although, a couple of super cute guys walked in and pretty much walked back out due to the overdose of sausage. lol. I also unknowingly ended up in a weird triangle of like with this one dude and the new roommate. awkward. She likes him, he likes me, I think they're both meh. Em, you can totally have him. I'm actually glad I've left the country for a few months so I don't have to exchange awkward text msgs. Also, went to the flea market in Bernal Heights. Such a great way to spend a lazy Sunday.

Charl started her internship and William came by to visit during my last week. It honestly could have gone better. Having a friend come visit before relocating is kind of a dumb thing to do. Nevertheless, it all worked out without too much stress. I felt bad since I dragged him around all around the bay area to spend some time with my friends but what can I do when I want to hang out with ppl before I leave? He was a good sport about it but a little too quiet (my friends thought he was either super shy or super weird. lol.). Maybe it was a little too much to introduce him to SF during pride weekend. lol. Which brings me to another point. Pride. It was great and the gays were funny and the pink party was very very crowded. Bad part: we lost William. Seriously, shoulda put one of those kiddie harnesses on him :) I prolly should have had one too. lol. The hilarious part of the night was when Van bumped into her new co-workers; shattering their image of her as a good little asian girl and "outing" her because they thought I was her lesbian partner. haha. Then, on the way home from the pink party, a bunch of gays thought we were together too. lol. In hindsight, we did look pretty lesbian-ish and we have a pic from the next day to prove it. lolz. We were gonna see the backstreet boys perform but they took too long so we went to see the rice rockettes perform. It was an awesome drag show :)

So, that wraps up my SF experience. Totally gonna miss the SF bay area.

The flight to KL was one of the longest I've ever taken. San Jose to LA; LA to Taipei, Taipei KK, KK to KL. as comfortable as it was on business (thank you frequent flyer miles!), having that many layovers is killer. Was barley home 2-3 days when I got hit by some virus that's going around KL. the doc said it was the change of weather but still, I was and currently am super miserable. One week later, the meds are gone but no improvement apart from losing the fever. The second dr's visit and second round of stronger meds seem to be working but we'll see. I'm crossing my fingers because starting a month's worth of hard kuli labour in 2 days time while still sick is gonna suck so bad.

So, yeah. One week in KL and pretty much nothing to show for it. I barely had my fav foods (doc's advice - no oily, no spicy, no fried and no cold foods = no to 95% of Malaysian food ) but I did manage to meet up with some ppl and make it to Sara's engagement thingy today. Sigh, everything feels so rushed. Cambodia tomorrow! eeps!!

why does it even surprise me....

So, I called Citibank to let them know I may be using my credit card outside the states and guess what? Apparently, they made the decision to cancel my card in Jan this year because I hadn't used it in 4 months. Really? WTF Citibank. I didn't even get any notification. Plus, I haven't used it in 4 months because they kept upping the APR on me without telling me. Bloody shady is what that is.

I wonder if they'll close my bank account too cos I haven't been using it since they are terrible in general and their customer service sucks for both bank accounts and credit cards...why no, I do not want to talk to you, Meh-tew, because you're obviously answering my call from a call center in India since you can't even pronounce your English name right and you keep telling me that the server is down for updates when I want to make any type of changes to my account.

The lady I spoke to today was like, if you want, I can transfer you and you can sign up for a new credit card. Are you kidding me? I was on the fence with Citibank but this is the last straw - never again Citibank, never again. They've lost all my business (I think I'll go close my account this week and just stick with Bank of America) and I will never recommend them to anyone. Absolutely horrible!

What now????

Friday, June 18, 2010

So, remember how excited we were to have scored a car two days ago?? well, Char went to the DMV and the change of title can't be processed without a smog cert. The dude who sold it to us had apparently smogged it like 6 months ago which leaves us SOL because it needs to be within 3 months to be valid. We took it in today to get a smog check and it FAILED!!!!!! It passes the nox check for the 25 mph but not for the 15 mph. WTF?!? In my sister's words "so, we're polluting if we drive slow but okay if we drive fast?"

Yeah, we're both not happy campers right now. But we called the guy and I spoke to him and he agreed to pay for the smog failure diagnostics and depending on how much it costs to fix the problem, he might pay the full amount or we work something out. At least he didn't run away and not pick up and all. But this still sucks. Also, the odometer says 103, 000 miles but the title says 141,000. So, in the 8 months the dude had the car, it changed. The mechanic at the smog place told us that's a huge thing we could nail him with because it's fraud. So, if he doesn't work with us to get everything sorted out, we're gonna report him. Also, no smog cert = no change of title = the car is still in his name (well, his girlfriend's name) so he knows he can't run cos if he does and we're vindictive, we can rack up the traffic fines on the car (like parking fines or camera-caught red light violations, etc) and he'll have to pay or lose his license. We're not like that and totally want to sort everything out but I hope he realizes how much damage we could do if we were so inclined. I wish we could just get our money back in exchange for the car but we can't. apparently he's used the money already.....it's probably a lie but that just means we can't do a 90 day return like at the stores. Boo.

Regardless, we can't check or do anything until we get the diagnostics done on Monday. The dude offered to fix the car himself but we really don't trust him to do a good job. See? we're learning. The learning curve is a steep one but that's life. It's just one more thing checked off on my check list of things I've been screwed over for in America. I have one for each country; it's easier to keep track of that way and makes for interesting comparisons.

So yeah, despite my near constant googling of any and all resources on buying a used car, there are many perils that google did not warn me about. FML.

Also, the creepy black dude who tried to sell us the Mazda called Char twice yesterday to see if we want the car and then when we called back today to say no, he was like, "so now that we've got business out of the way, when are you free to hang out?" She tells him she's too busy. "Oh, what about your friend?" My sis looks at me and lies about me leaving this weekend. "Oh, alright. Can I keep your number and call you to chat?" WTF? Seriously?!?!? Char has got his number saved under "Creeper. Do NOT Answer" Apparently, he called about an hour later but we were receiving the bad news about the smog test and didn't hear the phone. ......ooops....too bad.....NOT! Jeeze, why us???

finally, the search has ended!

Thursday, June 17, 2010

So, shopping on craigslist for a used car on a very small budget is ....quite an experience. After a couple days of intensive searching (because we've learnt that all the good stuff goes quickly - sometimes just hours after being posted!), we've got a new addition to the family fleet:

A '97 Honda Civic! Yay!

It's a little beat up and will need some work done but we think we done good for what we paid. The budget was about $3000, we got it for $2300 and repairs will probably cost about $500-700 ish. Not bad for San Jose.

Honestly though, if we could have afforded something more for less hassle we definitely would have paid it because the search was annoying and definitely left us with some stories to tell :/

The first car we went to look at was a '95 Honda accord. It looked good on the outside but that was because the guy selling it had an autobody shop and had repainted it so he could sell it for more. It was about our price range and Char was optimistic because she thought the seller was Asian - and we all know that the stereotypical asian dude ALWAYS keeps his car in good shape. lol. Uh, Char's racial meter via the phone sucks because the guy was Hispanic. There's nothing wrong with that. I just thought it was funny how she totally could not tell through the phone. Anyhoo, we ask a couple of questions and every time we touched on something we thought was wrong with the car, the guys would start with, " Uh yeah, about that....." He had apparently bought it at an auction and fixed it up. While that's fine and the outside looked brand spankin' new, things were broken and there were holes in the seats. The engine also made this loud squealing noise before rumbling to life rather reluctantly ("Yeah, about that.....my mechanic says that's normal for that kind of car." Seriously? Do you think we were born yesterday??). We took it around the block and it was loud as heck. So yeah, no. 1 car down, and the search continues.

The next car we looked at was this Mazda being sold by an African American dude. Char thought he sounded Mexican on the phone. That's phone 2, Char 0. He came rumbling in on his harley and was super nice....at first. he was up front about some major things the car needed and as we took it around the block, it was loud but not as loud as the first one. We chatted and apparently he used to be a fireman (it made me think of you Queena) and was injured and taking fire classed at community college. Now, it's the stupidest thing but I always feel that men in uniform like firemen, EMTs and policemen are less likely to scam me....it's probably not true but that's how we've been conditioned - to always trust uniformed officers (urm, except for the cops back home. with them you always know that they won't even bother trying to scam you; they just ask for the bribe upfront). So when he mentioned the fireman thing along with the (vague) honesty he showed about the car's major defaults, I was more inclined to trust him about the car than say, car guy #1 from the day before. He also mentioned that he used to be a mechanic for Toyota and we could obviously see that he was working on several classic cars at his place (He had a very sweet mustang he was restoring).

So it's all good. Until he starts being inappropriate. It starts off small - a comment about us being "beeautiiiful girls from Maaaalaysiiiiaaaa" and went on to "do you guys date" and "Have you ever dated a black guy". Urm....what??? He then insistently gives me a ride on his harley (because I said I don't like motorbikes and had never been on one and I figure, eh, what the heck) which was nice of him but then he mentions that I can now say that my first "ride" was with a black man and he tells us to add him on facebook and that he wants to take us out to dinner and we can ride with him and his motorbike buddies. EXCUSE ME ?!? WTH?!? yeah, we tried to leave so many times but he just went on and on and on. general conversation is fine but we've only just met you like 15 mins ago! Innuendos and questions about our dating lives and weird overtures of friendship? So NOT okay! Then he calls char the next day to chat. Urm. As interested as we were in the car, this dude was seriously creeping us out so we cut our losses and lied and hopefully we'll never see/hear from him ever again. That's like 2 hours wasted.

Next dude we met with for a '96 honda was suuuuuuuper shady. once again, Char thought he was Asian....he was Mexican. lol. Phone 3, Char 0. It looked alright but he was very pushy. Before we had even gone around the block completely, he pretty much asked us for the entire amount in cash upfront right then and there and kept telling us that he had so many ppl lined up for it. He also didn't want us to check the car out at a mechanic's and when asked about the pink slip and bill of sale, he took out some crumpled pieces of paper from his pocket. Urm? It wasn't even his car. He was so pushy and shady, we said no then went grocery shopping. lol. He later called Char and was like, when you wanna come and see the car and Char was like....urm, I just saw it. i wanted to take it in to a mechanic tomorrow. He quickly hung up on her.

Finally, we end up at yesterday's car experience which was actually relatively painless and more legit than any of the others. We checked it out, test drove it and brought it to the mechanic. There are a couple of major defects that will require work (but we kinda knew it would based on how much we were paying for it), it's a little scratched up and has really tacky zebra floor mats (we're tossing those. eww.) and they totally lied about the mileage (it was still less than every other car we'd seen) but the guy was super nice, pretty up front about things and was very patient when we brought it to be checked out and a few hours later, my sis is the proud owner of her first car! :) This whole buying a used car is a huge hassle though. I can totally see why a lot of ppl like to go to dealers. But beggars can't be choosers and we managed to luck out fairly quickly in the search for transportation. Man, was that exhausting!

what a weekend

Monday, June 14, 2010

Nessie's birthday weekend was awesome :)

the general gathering at 83 proof was good - saw some familiar faces and had to entertain weird new ones (bleh) and nessie was totally right about the bartender being really really hot AND he could make some amazing cocktails that I sampled off the 'mos. yum. Like all drunken nessie gatherings, it was very entertaining to see her totter around the bar and try to stay in her red hoochie mama dress. lol. i think some of the best quotes from that night were:

~ "i'm not going to titty fuck my phone!" ~ when Nessie, worried about losing her phone, refused to keep it in the cleavage between dolce and gabbana because Lilo was gonna be evil and call it while it sat between the ginormous boobies

~ " my dress is three six inch penises long! see, one, two, three!"~ when Van rather loudly hand measured the length of her red hochie mama dress

i'm sure there were more but i really can't remember them. lol.

the indo mee after was really good too, especially when van cooked it and fried an egg drunk and mostly blind at 3am. real talent right there.

day 2 of the nessie extravaganza was fairly mellow in the morning as we wandered around the mission then took like a 15 min nap :) Then it was off to Foreign Cinema where the food was pretty good and terribly expensive - the fried chicken was probably the best entree, the sea bass....not so much, the aprium tart was good and the sexy beast was wonderful - tastes almost like ribena. the movie, a single man, looked interesting. might have to go watch it now. the 'mos all looked really nice and sonny proved that he was not a bad gay by finding a shiney card and great watch for nessie. After dinner drinks and desserts were followed by more drinks and a cheese plate at this wine bar called Heart where there were loads of marina yuppies slummin' it and we sat next to a group of cougars and talked loudly about sex. lol. And to top it all off, the 'mos took my gay bar cherry by bringing me to the castro to dance. it was great since there weren't any guys trying to grossly hump me on the dance floor (biggest pet peeve at a club) but also terribly depressing because a whole bunch of the guys there were just gorgeous ... and totally with another gorgeous guy. sigh. the whole "all the good ones are taken or gay" really rang true here. oh san francisco. meh.

day 3, we woke up to nessie imitating a demented rooster as she squawked about being hungry. it was an interesting way to wake up. Had brunch at Stable which was alright -  the guy at the counter was weird and i totally thought he was gay and flirting with Lyell but he was straight and the other waiter, the real 'mo, had a very very revealing v-neck shirt on.... which revealed waaaaaaaayyy too much chest hair for it being so early in the day and us not having had our first meal yet. all in all, a great ending to a wonderful weekend. i'm going to miss outings like this so much when I leave :(

also, on an unrelated note, char and I went out to look at a car or two today and I randomly got to ride around the block on the back of a harley davidson moterbike. lol. talk about random.

When life is good in too many locations...

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

The week started off with a great dinner in Berkeley - good food, great (and enlightening) conversation and much laughter. Then up to Berkeley again today (it's like I never left, I've been up so often) for SEA trip planning, good food and lots and lots of laughter. Like I said, life is awesome!

But!

I just found out that back home, the boys and girls of the RSC Dingoes get to meet THE ALL BLACKS tomorrow!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!! AAAAAAaaahhhhhh! They're meeting all 60 of the World XV including Rugby legends Jonah Lomu, Andrew Mehrtens, Carlos Spencer,  Greg Somerville, Byron Kelleher and Reuben Thorne!!! OMG! And it's not one of those crappy meet the fans kinda thing - they get to meet them for DRINKS at a pub in Damansara!!! Oh man. So jealous!

Seriously. Life is good right now. But it seems to be pretty good back home too!! Why can't I be in two places at once?

p.s. making prawn noodle stock and there are cats lined up outside the window :)

Seriously, Lilah is so cute in that chubby asian baby way.....She totally made me want a baby or pester charl for one....at least while I held her....when I gave her back, the ovaries stopped working overtime, rational thinking returned and reality set in - maybe I just wanna borrow her for a couple of cuddles instead :)

Merv sadly doesn't know what to do with unsuspecting babies.

Charl, contemplating babies??

Aaaahh, SO SMALL AND CUTE! I want one tooooooooooo....but only on loan.

today....was okay. woke up really grouchy for some unknown reason.... but went used car shopping with charl. that was fun! .....not. four used car dealerships later, i think we're better off getting a car off craigslist than from the lots. eurgh.

but to make the day even better......

I spent 20 mins trying to plunge a toilet that is stuck for no reason. really. all I got was some nasty air..... so why the hell is it even stuck?!?!

ARGH!! seriously. Charl needs to call me back ASAP so I can get the landlord's number so I can get him to call the handyman. In the mean time, google has absolutely failed me :(

So yeah, this is how I'm spending my saturday night....quality time with my friends the toilet and plunger. Lovely.

Fanime is over! yay! The rest of the con was not as mellow as Friday night and that sucked but overall, it was a pretty mellow con compared to last year. Not sure if I'll be back next year but if Charl is graduating, I might make it.

The bbq at Henri's was great too. I'm glad we got to see them and Mei-Hsia's fam too. The littlest Lin is sooooooooooo cute! ~ mellow and very wriggly :) And Anya is a spunky, energetic handful, as usual. I really can't believe she's already 5 and the baby is now 7 months. Time really does fly. Man, I feel old-ish.

sleep deprived but loving it :)

Saturday, May 29, 2010

wow. longest commute ever. took me 2 and a half hours to get back to San Jose from Berkeley O.o I need to remember that the bus route is longer on the weekends. Gah. Anyhow, lunch with Van and Vaish was good - great day, awesome patio spot and delicious food; La Note always delivers :) I'm glad I made it even with the horrible commute both ways. I hope everything goes well for Vaish in LA but I'm not envious at all....I have never wanted nor will I ever want to live there...the smog in the valley just kills me :(

It's back to the con in a bit. Last night was pretty damn mellow for a Friday night at con. Like really mellow. No one playing with fire, no drunken hockey team and no dumb ass underaged girls tempting perverts by going up deserted stairwells in short skirts at 3 am in the morning. I do have to say tho, we've got a lot of newbies and while it means good things like shorter hours and what not, it sort of annoyed me. We had too much traffic on the radio, there was a surprising lack of common sense some times and our newly acquired lounge was a pig sty. So gross. I totally left passive aggressive notes about cleanliness. LOL. I also think I may have gotten hit on by a closeted gay (maybe bi?) guy who insists that he is comfortable with his sexuality or a really, really, really awkward straight anime nerd. Whatever it was, it was 3am and I could not be bothered to figure it out (and I totally zoned out on him about 5 mins in). Surprisingly, there were a couple of hot guys....except they came attached to some very fierce and vampy asian girls...sigh, go figure.

Hopefully the rest of the con will be as mellow as it was last night :)

p.s: Once again, the neighbours are asses. The fight last night brought 4 cop cars to our front door and it started up again at 8am!! Was tempted to ask one of the cops to drop me off downtown....because seriously, their lame ass domestic disturbance did not need 4 cop cars. However, the walk through dodgy downtown san jose last night was wonderful...in a dodgy sort of way - 25 badly lit blocks and I never got harassed once. Awesome :)

and the nerd fest begins....

Friday, May 28, 2010

lol. Fanime is back! which means I'm a gonna go staff there now. Yes, it's an anime conference; yes, I'm a nerd. But really, I mostly go to see my friends......and because the dumb asses that we have to run after are hilarious in their own way. Con security would be a lot easier to handle if people used what little common sense that have. Staffing at con is pretty miserable in it's own way but it helps that I'm established enough that I can just walk in on my own schedule. Sometimes, starting with the people who are now in charge brings perks - they deal with all the political crap and I'm allowed to just hang out with friends and do whatever :D

So now, I'm gonna walk like 20 blocks though dodgy downtown San Jose (and leave the stupid neighbours who are slamming doors and breaking crockery) to go stop up-skirt perverts and drunk otakus from creating havoc at an anime convention for the next four days. I might as well try to stop world hunger and the wars while I'm at it, I'd probably have a better chance....why did i sign up again?? wish me luck!

when habits subtly sneak up on me...

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Okay, I've randomly just realized that I've developed a pottymouth. I mean, I guess I've known for a while but I hadn't realized how bad (in my opinion) I've gotten. I'm not entirely bad to the point of cussing like a sailor but I've noticed that I use expletives a lot in everyday conversations and I usually only realize I've used them after they've rolled off my tongue so effortlessly and I mentally cringe at having cussed without reason.

It's a little ironic.

I've always been fairly proper and very conscious about these things and very disproving (I like to do the passive-aggressive glare thing) when pottymouths were in my vicinity or around kids. Heck, I didn't learn the F-bomb until I was 15 or 16! And now, I'm dropping them in everyday conversations like they're going out of style. It's not attractive.

It used to be that I was this polite little asian kid but now, it's like the filter between my mouth and brain have developed some great big holes. It's probably cos there aren't any little old asian ladies who will randomly scold people for using crass language since everyone cusses here anyway. lol. I've only developed it in the last few years and it really isn't all that bad (I suppose it can be considered mild) but it is driving the prim and proper miss in me suitably crazy for having developed the habit in the first place. Oh man, I'm gonna have to relearn the finer points of self censorship and consciously practice it like crazy or something.

I do have to wonder where I picked it up from (Marin? College? Europe? TV?). New mid-year resolution: stop cussing so much!!

first hectic weekend in forever and I'm loving it!

Monday, May 24, 2010

This weekend was like a blast from the past. lol. Totally did the college student thing and realized how much I miss it.

Started the weekend with a somewhat chill Friday night in SF. Driving up with JK, we realized that our dads went to the SAME highschool and were probably there around the same time. o.O Man, what a coincidence. But then again, KL is really quite small and MBS is a pretty popular school to attend. But still, small world, eh? Now we're gonna go bug our dads to see if they knew each other......I think it would be hilarious and probably very, very awkward to meet JK's dad if they have bad blood between them....like if one of them bullied the other or something. lol.

Met Van's new roommate. Clingy and needy does not even begin to describe this girl. Poor Van and Susan....this one will drive them up the wall. She's nice and pretty I guess, in a fairly generic blond way and she immediately reminded me of sorority girls during rush. I suppose she's new to town and naive but the girl needs hobbies. All I can say is, good luck ladies and remember, it's hard (but not entirely impossible) to throw a "meet the new roommate" party if the roommate moves out before the party.

Vaish's thing at the W hotel was a little bit of a bust which was both a relief and an annoyance. On one hand, we (mainly meaning Van) would not have to endure being mistaken for an escort in the hotel lobby as we head for the pretentious XYZ (if that happened to me, my contingency plan was to hide behind Van and let the magical double D power of Dolce & Gabbana distract the out of town CEOs looking for a good time :D) AND we wouldn't have to pay outrageous prices for drinks. On the other hand, we ended up horribly overdressed at O'Brien's; the type of overdressed where everyone looks at you and thinks "douche" (according to Van) or thinks that you're a Marina girl with a bad sense of direction. lol. I solved my problem by keeping my coat on over my little black dress while Van had no issues with being overdressed and being hit on. lol. Sigh, sometimes I wish I had her confidence. It's times like this when I wonder if I'm missing out on something by not being inclined to meet or pick guys up at bars. Regardless, between the few of us (mostly Van) and the cute, awesome bartender, we got the birthday girl drunk. Mission accomplished :) Too bad Van's eye fuck buddy didn't meet standards in person...but the whole process was an interesting (and educational) experience to watch. If there is a female version of "The Game" published, I definitely need a copy because I obviously do not have a clue as to how it works.

Van, do you like how much I've referenced you in regards to this one night? lol. Can anyone tell that the bar/club scene is really not my thing??

Anyway, had a great time with Van (as always) as we giggled and warbled '90's love songs into the wee hours of the morning (and probably kept the new roommate and her guest up). Totally brings back the nostalgia of college days gone by. Man, we are SO easily pleased :)

Saturday was a satisfying rush of used book sales all over the south bay. I absolutely love the Friends of the Library book sales!! Wish I could be here for the huge one at Fort Mason in Sept. I'm one of those kids you can leave in a library or bookstore (or supermarket) for a couple of hours and I'd be pleased as punch. Dropped by for a joint birthday do later that night and caught up with a whole bunch of people I've not seen in about a year. And had some kick ass brownies.....they were so good, half a pan's worth came home with me :)

Apparently, it's a weekend of reunions. Saw Rachel one last time and met up with a bunch of ppl in Berkeley for coffee (ah, lounging around in Strada and cutting through campus) and an early dinner. Wonderful company on a really nice day. What more could I ask for?? Apparently, a second dinner with the sibs + Han at that Hong Kong restaurant in Newark. So full. But so very satisfied with life right now :)

Seriously, it was an awesome weekend!

suddenly popular, but not really

It's really kinda ridiculous.

Had another job offer to go to Utah immediately for a month. I know it's getting to summer and CRM picks up but why can't I find anything here in the bay area? it drives me a little crazy that all these jobs are coming one after the other now when before there wasn't anything and yet, I'm still unemployed because I don't have the time or inclination to take an out of state assignment. I totally wish I could go make some money but I'd rather catch up with people which brings me to my other point. It may be that people are finally free now that school is out or that people feel like they have to meet up since I'm leaving but I've gone from being a hermit in the living room to being out most of the week lately. Apart from the fact that my piggy bank is being hit hard, i'm not complaining; it's nice to meet up with folks but it does feel rather rushed, like I have to cram everything into the remaining weeks. Of which I have about 5 left. Man, time does fly. Urp. So much to do, so little time! I need to actually start crossing things off my list instead of adding to it.

Sometimes, it really just comes down to timing.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Had a great time with Julie and Rachel today catching up and gossiping for hours on end. I think I may have blabed a little too much, I was so excited to see them again. I can't believe we let it go for a year. We definitely need to keep in touch more.

Anyway, we were just leaving Santana Row when Rachel called and said she had a flat. We found her and I offered to change it for her but she has AAA so we just waited with her for the AAA guy. Out of nowhere, a firetruck pulls up and 4 hot firemen get out and offer to help. We told them that we had already called AAA but I guess they really wanted something to do so they started to change the tire. Unfortunately, AAA shows up right about then and the firemen leave (looking fairly put out at having their rescue attempt interrupted).....

So yeah, it's all about the timing. The firemen should have driven by before she called AAA. It would have worked out much better for us that way - the perfect end to a great day :D lol.

Queena, this made me think of you and your love of firemen. My friends and I agree, they're hot.

I just got a job offer in LA and a possible job offer in June up here in the Bay Area.

Seriously?!?

WTH?!?

Why does life keep offering me all these tempting opportunities when I'm back on track and I have less than a month and a half left here?!?!?!?!

I've been UNEMPLOYED for the last FIVE MONTHS!!! Where the heck were those opportunities then?!?

Aaaaaaaahhhhh!! sometimes life plays some fairly crappy jokes on me.

Also, my sis just left for a banquet for her business association and her friend came to pick her up. I felt like I should have faked some tears and taken pictures, it was so much like prom.....lol. However, they're only good friends and he's not her type and she told me off before I could get the camera. Note to self: Keep camera on hand for times like this.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

So, that job from craigslist? I'mma wondering if it's worth it; pretending to be perky and outgoing for hours on end is tiring. Not even 1 day in and some of my coworkers annoy me......and made me cringe several times. Also, I'm not sure but I think I may have gotten hit on while handing out "free" boxes. urgh. Sigh, craigslist...why? What new lows, right? San Jose can be so damn weird. seriously. Charl, I'm sorry for not believing you before. You're totally right.

Huh. I was up before 2pm today for the first time in.......a long time. Why? Because I got a job through craigslist that'll last for the week (Yes, I am that desperate to be doing something, anything and get paid for it). Huh. I can't believe I'm going to be waking up early in the morning for the next few days...it's kinda surreal. Which just means that I've been unemployed and bumming for waaaaaaay too long.

An offer just came in to do some fieldwork in Cancun for the next two months.....I really want to go. Especially since everything is comped except for the flight. I wish I had the money and didn't have to tie up loose ends here in California. This sucks. When I'm kicking it for months on end, nothing happens but the minute I have plans, a world of opportunities opens up. Sigh. Story of my life.

Anyone wanna fly me to Cancun??

The verdict is IN!! finally.

Friday, May 7, 2010

Okay, as my sister said, it's a very big leap of faith (for me at least) but some sort of money has come in (as usual....it always works out that way :D) and although my mind is screaming "THE DEBT, OH THE DEBT!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? THINK OF THE DEBT!!!" as I hesitantly push the acceptance button, it isn't as big a debt as I feared it would be.

SO,

It's so long San Francisco Bay Area and HELLO HAWAII!!!!!!!!

I think I'll be able to work up more enthusiasm once I get over the part about debt. And yes, the debt part is really big for me because I basically managed to fund most of my undergraduate experience on my own without incurring any debt (to banks or any government or indulging in organ trade) in the 4 years or so that I was in college. I suppose that it was wishful thinking to assume that I might be able to pull it off again. If you can't already tell, I'm pathetically paranoid about being in any kind of debt. So yea, I've got the "DEBT!!OMG!DEBT!!" soundtrack on repeat playing in the back of my mind.

Hopefully, the "HAWAII!!!YAY!HAWAII!!!" soundtrack will take over soon.

Am very bummed to be leaving the SF Bay Area but,

ALOHA HAWAII!

Yes, I'm really gonna start the travel series. yay!

Thursday, May 6, 2010

I’ve only just started to arrange my travel memorabilia which is very telling in terms of my slacker ways. I went to Europe at the end of July 2008!! As it is, since I am a creature of habit and I like to obsessively make lists (no really, I am constantly making lists and schedules that I tend to stare at periodically (whilst sighing) and never follow), I’m gonna start off my travel series with the summer of 2008 because from then on, it was all just one big holiday. Can’t say it was a restful one but I don’t think I’d trade it for the world.

I traveled from May 2008 to April 2009. It was seriously epic for me. I like to think I'm pretty street savvy but really, I'm pretty naive when it comes to certain things. I thought that after coming to America and navigating life here on my own (for the most part), I was ready for anything. Home sickness? Hah! Getting scammed? Double Hah! Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. I really really thought I'd be ready for anything else the world would throw at me after my experiences in the states because, seriously, they were some of the shadiest years of my life (mostly due to my surroundings and the crazies my granduncle attracts like flies. The man is like a saint. Seriously. Who the heck puts up with that many insane people?!?). Even then, shady for me is probably tame compared to how bad others have it but then again, it is pretty shady for someone who came here to study.

America IS a land of opportunity but it totally goes both ways - while you're trying to take whatever opportunity the land of the free is willing to offer (and then some), there are so many more people who are willing to grab their opportunity at your expense. Believe me, I've been taken advantage of enough times that if I were inclined to be bitter about it, I'd say that I've been used like a three dollar whore, except for the part that involves sex or the part that involves payment. BUT, I'm not bitter like that so it doesn't matter :D (really, I'm not. I've just always wanted to use that expression in a sentence somewhere and truthfully, where else would I get the chance to use it in polite society if not in my blog while I'm ranting? lol. I have a growing collection of expressions that I've picked up here and there which I'm saving for that epic novel I'm writing in my head that will never be put to paper).

Anyway, where was I?

Oh yeah, I guess America should be counted as traveling experience but I was so busy (and lacking funds) that until this year, I've never been out of California. Yep. 5 years and the only time I traveled out of the state was with my team which went something like this - aeroplane > motel > field where we kick ass/get our asses kicked > motel > aeroplane. If this counts as traveling, then I've been to Albuquerque, NM and Vancover, Canada. Even so, that's just sad.

Regardless of where I've been in America, I thought my stint here had amply prepared me for traveling in foreign lands but in reality, not so much. Denmark was a little like america all over again; people are really nice for the most part but there are always a few scumbags out there who will try to take advantage of someone new to the country. I suppose this just comes with the territory when moving to a new country. Traveling however, is different from moving somewhere; and that's the real kicker. I'd say traveling on my own for a portion of it really made the difference even more pronounced. So, yeah, there were ups and downs and when I look back on it, I really want to kick myself for being so naive and letting people take advantage of me then feeling guilty (it doesn't make sense, i know) and upset. Was I ready to brave the world on my own? Probably not. But then again, who is? I'm glad I did it though. I've learnt a lot, especially from the bad bits and while I can't guarantee I won't be taken unawares again due to my ongoing battle with chronic obliviousness, I'll be more prepared to handle whatever comes up the next time. Hopefully. Oh, and I probably wouldn't travel through something like 63 cities/towns/villages in about 15 countries in 3 months. I've been burnt out and slowly recovering ever since.

That said, this is the start of an account of my year country hopping. Hopefully I'll be able to get a travel post up every few days, interspersed with random rants and food posts.

Enjoy.

And another one bites the dust....

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

So, just found out another high school classmate of mine got hitched. O.o  Congrats man!

And the first one to get married has a child now. Again, O.o

Is there some biological clock out there that's ticking and I'm just not aware of it?

The friend who alerted me to this change in status for our mutual childhood compadre asked me to hook him up if he ever came to the states when i jokingly asked him when he was going to settle down. I mentally went through my American friend list, then scrolled through my facebook friend list to double check said list and the reality of it all is........ I don't have many friends who are straight and single and looking to settle down. I figure about 70-80% of my friends are cute gay boys who would be perfect, except for the part that they don't date girls, or lesbians. This means we're both out of luck. (and people ask me why I'm single.....) Friends have been suggesting match.com and what not. But I'm not that desperate. yet. or ever.

LOL. I basically told him that I could hook him up with lesbians but my straight, single asian girl collection is limited. And like the (arrogant) straight male he is (who has read and practiced the wisdom of "the Game"), he proclaims that lesbians are okay; he's never tried one but he thinks he can turn 'em. LOL. OH Jon... somewhere out there, there are women who want to beat you up.

The game was good. We won the championship back. Lots of hard hits, a couple of cheap shots, a body or two flung around and some pretty good rugby. Oh yeah, two shirts got ripped. lol. A little too much kicking for me though...it's not as exciting when the ball gets kicked back and forth but I guess needs must and all that since both teams were fairly evenly matched and there wasn't much scoring. My sis thought it was funny when ppl got squished (literally at one point in the game) and didn't really understand what was going on but she's an awesome trooper for bunking down in the cold with me to watch a bunch of guys run around on the field :)

gonna start putting up the travel stuff once I get over my intense dislike of the pic uploader that blogger torments me with.

I had a chat today with the prof i've been in contact with from UH and she was very lovely, but ultimately not very much help. I've actually had more help from the grad students I've emailed (makes more sense since they're more likely to have been in my situation recently). I really do like her though and since she's the one in charge of SEA archaeology grad students, she'd probably be my main adviser if I go. IF IF IF. I really want to say WHEN instead. I'm pretty much 85% there at saying yes.... BUT the deal breaker is the money. People are telling me yes, take it, but none of them are conscious of the high costs. And high costs they are indeed. They like to say that the cost of living in Honolulu is comparable to living in SF however, I don't think that's true. Housing is ridiculous and food apparently costs twice as much as it does anywhere else. So, it's about $25,000 in tuition and another $20,000-$25,000 to cover living costs and what not. That's a minimum total of $50,000a year!! What's a girl to do??? My options are: I wait for my financial aid package and pray to everything out there that they give me money or I live in humongous debt for the rest of my life (the kind that doctors and lawyers have but with no chance of ever making lotsa money) if the answer is yes and if i say no, then I'll be poor but not in debt and I'll prolly regret it...like forever. lol. So, still debating and will probably still be debating up to the deadline.....which is in about 10 days.

The great pick me up about this situation and the chat today is that I (accidentally) found out that the prof didn't pull any strings for me - fact is, she had already accepted two vietnamese students and was surprised when the admissions committee unanimously voted for me. uhh..... :D ?? I was wondering about how I got in, especially since she didn't make it sound very likely that I would when I last exchanged emails with her before they made the decision (hence the utter surprise of the acceptance letter).

It's immensely gratifying that they thought so much of my application and recommendations despite all the shortcomings that were glaringly obvious when you look at me on paper. I admit that I usually overlook my own skills and downplay everything else (although once in a while, I do take pride in my surprising achievements.....believe me, they come as surprises to me too). My philosophy in life (based on past experiences) is not to expect too much of anything - if you expect nothing, then you are pleasantly surprised when something does happen. I know it's not the best way of viewing life, but it's worked very well for me so far. It's interesting how much of an impact it has had on my subconscious mind; so much so that I have developed a tendency to cruise through life and not put much effort in a lot of what I do - I have never been very competitive and i am definitely not an alpha female, but I am glad that there are people who are willing to look past that and claim that I have potential. Whether or not they're right remains to be seen but I'm alot older now and hopefully wiser and more mature too; if the funding comes through, I really would like to take the opportunity to prove them right.

Wow...that was rather sappy and "deep".........it scares me sometimes that I have nothing else to do with my time but write entries like this one.

So, anyway, thanks Dr. S! You made my day : D oh, and so did the homemade creme caramel :)

Strawberry shortcakes

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

The last few weeks have seen an influx of cheap strawberries coming in to all the grocery shops in the area. It's bad for the growers (someone told me that farmers in Florida were just destroying the strawberry crop because it isn't worth the time and money to harvest it...which is super sad. but what can you do when everybody thinks it's a great idea to grow strawberries out of season??) but great for me. I managed to get 4 pounds of strawberries for about $5.

!!!!

!!! OMG!! GUYS! I can't believe it but I've found that one baklava that has been haunting me ever since I had my first bite in Plovdiv, Bulgaria!!! Yes, it's past 3 am and yes, I been online looking at recipes for hours and yes, this is what I do with my free time because I have no life. But! I've found it.....I'm close to deliriously happy right now.....mostly due to the fact that I've been staring at the screen and various recipes in various languages for the last 3 ++ hours or so and I probably need to sleep soon. I'm also really really REALLY hungry at this moment too.....

It all started with Jamille and exchanging baklava stories (among other things) the other day. We plan to meet up sometime next week to make some since we both can't deal with a full tray of it (well, we could but I'ma thinking the sugar overload would kill us ded). But it's all her fault that I resumed my search for that elusive little slice of heaven that particular baklava is to my stomach. Now, I finally have a name - it's apparently a sarma baklava where sarma means rolled and it's basically a thin sheet or two of phyllo dough, brushed with butter and stuffed with pistachios (no yucky walnuts for me - seriously, the reg walnut baklava is great and all but a pure pistachio baklava is GOLD! if you can't tell, i have an ongoing love affair with pistachios....mmmmmm...) and rolled up into a pistachio-phyllo log of luuurrv. Man, I am making myself soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hungry.

urm....okay, i'ma gonna go sleep now. i'm not sure why I had to excitedly declare my love for baklava at 3.45 in the morning but I just can't help it.....i have a sweet tooth a mile wide. this is also bringing back my eastern european/balkan food cravings like nobody's business

girl's day out - SF

Thursday, April 15, 2010

So, meeting up with the girls in SF the other day was awesome!! As usual, we were late and the queen got misdirected. lol. But lunch was great as was hanging out after. Best of all, the SEA travel plans are coming together nicely!!

We'll see how this first trip goes. if it works out well, it's gonna have to be made into an annual thing. yup. Do you hear that girls? Somehow, we'll have to make sure it becomes an ongoing adventure no matter where we end up :)

Man, I wish we could meet up more often.....makes me miss those carefree college days. I didn't realize it before, but I really really miss having a bunch of girl friends to hang out with.

It's the simple pleasures in life that make me feel accomplished

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Got my taxes done today at the library :) I love that they do it for free....but it's pretty sad too because that means I'm earning peanuts. I didn't realisze why one of my co-workers was so disgruntled that we were being paid as contractors but now I understand - it's costly for the contractor!! It's the first time I've ever ended up owing the government! >:( But the lady who did my taxes was super nice and helped me work out how to bring it down by calculating my expenses and all that. Don't ask me how....I have absolutely no idea how it works.

Since I was already at the library, I ended up spending a couple of hours worth of quality time there (and by a couple I mean I spent about 6 hours there until they kicked me out at closing time). I have an ongoing love affair with libraries - put me in one and you don't have to worry about me until you remember that you left me there or closing time.....whichever one comes first :) The best part?? Libraries are universal! Wherever they are in the world, they always carry an english book or two :) While I was traveling in Europe, the libraries were my fav places of all time cos they were so awesome - I've found shelter in them (when it was snowing really bad and I was freezing my butt off), I've slept in them (40 winks or so), I've enjoyed the free internet and people watching, I've killed time wandering around and reading random things....oh, and I guess the research thing is a plus too. Heck, at one point I had about 30-40 books in my room from the main library in Copenhagen and lemme tell you, the 30 odd books were hell to return when you factor in me with my dubious balancing skills, my rusty old bike, the long (to me at least) bike ride and that damned bridge I had to cross! Anyway, I came away with 11 hardcover books today which has me totally psyched! I'm totally getting my geek on. Why can't I get this way for non-leisure reading??

Beyond that, is it sad that this was one of the few excursions I've voluntarily undertaken in a while? (especially since I prolly wouldn't have left the house if I didn't urgently need to do my taxes) Guys, do you know what this means???

It's possible that my self-imposed HIBERNATION IS OVER!! yay! spring has come and all that jazz.....Slowly but surely, I'm being reintroduced to society :p Looking forward to catching up with the girls on Tues :D And starting the cooking craze I can feel creeping up on me (and the 7 cookbooks I checked out today). Life is good :D

So, today ....definitely a day for surprises.

First, Merv brings his budding romance home....some warning might have been nice cos I totally looked like a bum on the couch. urp. Anyway, she's nice. Very his type :D

Also, UW sent me a rejection email. Boo. But not that unexpected since prolly everyone else on the waitlist with me was more qualified than I am.

Charl just walked in the door with the mail 10 mins ago holding a small envelope from UH and everyone knows that small envelopes = rejection but, UH said YES!! Like WOAH. Really, really unexpected. Seriously. And this totally fucks up all my plans and back up plans. None of them ever took into account that UH would say yes. Especially since they never got my transcripts. Wow. I'm kinda stunned right now.

I'm not sure what to do now.....Hawaii is expensive. Very expensive. Not only fees but living costs as well. I don't know if I can afford it. Crap. I've got a coupla weeks to consider it but I have no idea what to do. Have to send out mass consulting emails now. Wark!!

love is in the air~

Sunday, April 4, 2010

Lolz. Merv just got home from a date and really, when I ask how it went, I don't want any details other than 'fine' or 'not good' or whatever. NO DETAILS PLS! ewwww. As far as I'm concerned, all my sibs are like the immaculate virgin - immaculate and virgins (but without the whole pregnancy thing going on). This will hold true even if they are married with 10 children. *puts fingers in ears* ~ lalalalala canthearyouimnotlistening ~ So, am now slightly scarred for life but somehow, I'll survive.

His story is actually kinda funny but totally expected (for me at least) considering where he works. This (semi-regular) girl came into the Starbucks he works at and asked for his number. lol. Yeah, he got hit on at work :D haha. But I've seen it happen alot when I did my starbucks stint so I wasn't all that surprised. Meanwhile, some of his friends are lamenting the fact that they are surrounded by what these fellows term 'non-eligibles' at work and how they never meet girls. They should just go work in a coffee shop.

Besides that, something must be going around this week cos my sis ended up on a date she didn't really know was a date until much later. 2nd valentines day coming around??

Man, it's totally sad that I'm living vicariously through my sis AND my bro. Of all ppl, my bro! Where's cupid when you need him to shoot you in the ass with one of those damned arrows?!? It might help if I wasn't a penniless hermit living in isolation but, eh......with my luck, I'd get a creepy, crazy weirdo so I guess I'm better off where I am - alone on the couch. lol.

panic at the disco.... give me five minutes to spaz out!

Monday, March 29, 2010

i've got a couple posts just waiting to be published....the LA trip from last weekend, some angsty self-reflective type posts that I'm still debating on whether to unleash on ppl (my emo-ness is fleeting but can be kinda intense and is usually a very very private deal for me), the travel series that is sitting, novel sized, in msword and being added to daily and etc. Mostly, I'm waiting for the pics before I post anything travel related. Where's the fun in talking about a place when there's no way to see it? Descriptive prose is great and all but I totally do not want to be like Tolkien.

I do have an update on school stuff tho. Illinois-Chicago said no. Not surprising. I expected it and it sounds rather spoilt of me to say that I wouldn't have wanted to go there anyway if they had said yes but that was my pov halfway thru the admissions process especially since the prof I was looking to work under did not respond to any inquiries whatsoever. What kind of message does that give prospective students? That and the fact that the anthro dept ppl there were total asses on the phone (I called to clarify some things about the admissions process way back when and was totally put off by the lady who talked to me like I was a particularly stupid child) meant that I was not looking to get in there but went through with the process anyway since I had already paid for it and paid for my transcripts to be sent there. If no money was involved, I would not have bothered. I still get huffy when I think about how bitchy that lady was on the phone. meh.

Hawaii....I don't even know anymore. They managed to not receive any of my transcripts and claimed they were missing a recommendation more than a month after apps were due. I've done everything I can on my side but I think I'm pretty much screwed. However, hope springs eternal, right?

Anyway, what's got me in a snit is that the prof in charge of the Angkor project sent out an email to me and some of the other participants to obtain more info from us for apps and passes and all that. That's great.....except she did it by forwarding the entire conversation I had with her prior to the email going out. So everyone on the email list read the convo and I'm really not happy about that at all. It had stuff like my GPA, who I've worked with so far, my resume attached, where I've applied, etc.

Yeah. I think it's really not done to do that.

Guess what happens after? I get this random email from one of the dudes on the email list saying he read the convo (ooh, big surprise there....but he did apologise for being nosy so, eh) and wanted to say hi because we're both Malaysian and he's going to Angkor and he applied to UW too. Urm. yeah. So what is the unintended side effect of this guy's casual email?? The loss of hope, that's what.  With one simple email, he totally crushes my hopes of getting into UW because apparently, he's a MA student at USM and is on the waitlist with me for a spot at UW. What's the problem, you ask? Well, I was banking on the fact that I was South East Asian/ Malaysian and the possibility of the uni doing work in Malaysia to give me an edge and the fact that I had visited and met the profs. Now, I find out that one of the ppl I'm up against is also Malaysian, has more experience in the area than I do along with definite contacts in Malaysia (my contacts are...urm....pending....), is more qualified (once he finishes his MA thesis this year), is going to work with UW at the fieldschool in the Philippines starting this week and has gone to all the regional conferences where he's met all the profs and even presented.

...........

Talk about being blindsided. So now, I have no edge whatsoever over the competition and overall, I'm less qualified. They should just send me the rejection already and be done with it.

I'm DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!

Well, that was part of my little spazzy panic attack when I got that email from him. Talk about a downer. But all is not lost, otherwise, I wouldn't be on the list up against super qualified ppl like that. Still crossing my fingers and toes. Maybe they'll be like....oh, this one has less experience = more trainable... and pick me. lol. who knows? could happen. here's to hoping but i ain't gonna spend anymore time spazzing out about it. It's times like this when I'm really grateful for my whatever attitude and total faith in well....fate and in karma and all that good stuff. If it was meant to be, it'll happen.....if not, something else just as great will creep up and boink me when I least expect it :) now, i gotta go look for cookies to console myself with. I love how my (sorta) angsty moments are wonderful excuses to ply myself with food :D

Summer is looking much brighter :)

Thursday, March 18, 2010

AAAAaaahhhhhhhh! Awesome news!

So, I've been in discussions with a prof at UH and she invited me to be part of her team on a dig in Cambodia! Just got back the details and really, how could I say no? I'm so totally there! That means I'm gonna be going home for summer, doing the Indiana Jones thing in Cambodia for a month and hopefully traveling in SEA for a bit after!!! Wooohoo!! Best part? She's partially subsidizing it :) And the rest is coming from my sister...no, it's not sugah mama money, it's her student loan money (which she is not using and only took 'just in case'....we think this qualifies as a 'just in case' moment so I will not entertain accusations of stealing her lunch money) and I'll have to pay her back but at least I don't have to worry about funding it for now!!!

St patty's day + alcohol = stupidity in other people

Of all the sane people living on our street, how/why did we get stuck with the crazy losers?

Should have known that St Patty's day would draw out our obnoxious neighbours (they had been on a much appreciated down-low in terms of public disturbances). They had some friends over in the afternoon and started partying...and really, whatever. I get it's THE Irish drinking holiday in the states and I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is the fact that the neighbour and one of his/his gf's friends got into a fight at 2am in the morning and the most godawful racket resulted. It sounded like a Jackie Chan movie where the fight was going from room to room, furniture was breaking, holes were being punched into the walls, and there was the expected macho posturing bullshit and female screeching in the background. For a moment we contemplated calling the cops...but decided that it wasn't our problem. I'm sure at least one person had a phone they could use when they took a break from sounding like a dying muskrat. no way in hell were we going over to break that shit up; we've got some sense of preservation.

Anyway, it only stopped cos the neighbour left his place and was ranting outside the house while his equally crazy gf worked herself up into a frenzy and started heaving (dry or not, I couldn't tell....but if she puked on anything of ours, I'm gonna kick their asses). So I was graciously given the opportunity to listen to him rant on the phone and her making pukey sounds for about an hour or so. yeah, this is the soundtrack I want to hear at 3 in the morning. So, they wait for the cops but nothing happens so they go back into their place and once again, mortal kombat 2 starts up (but a less cool version). As before, it dies down when they leave their place.

The cops come at around 5am. I'm totally pissed and haven't slept because of racket (them, not the cops). The cop does his job and all is well. Yay. Except, not quite. We're really angry with them and the lousy neighbours being who they are, we know they're not even going to apologise for the crap last night.

The silver lining on this damn cloud?

I thought it was amusing that they got chased out of their own place TWICE by the guest they were fighting with. LAME. Even chimps do a better job of defending their territory than these two. *shakes head sadly* It's times like this when I wish technology didn't interfere with Darwin's evolutionary theory....life would be much quieter....and less filled with crazies.

In totally unrelated news, the ice cream trucks of my neighbourhood have stated using birdcalls instead of the usual circus music....I really wonder about that tactic.....

reassessment...could this be my pre-quarter life crisis?

Friday, March 12, 2010

These last few months have given me a lot of thinking time and I've had the opportunity for quite a few candid chats with various people including my sister. That plus going through my memorabilia and trying to sort it all out for scrapbooking and blogging and just sighing in nostalgia have caused me to reassess my plans and back up plans (of which I have many, some of them highly unlikely, some of them distinctly implausible).

I'm feeling restless and now i'm not too sure if grad school would be the right option for me. Will that mean that I will reject an offer? I can't honestly answer that question. Does that mean I've heard back? No, not at all. If anything, decisions have been pushed back even further and I won't find out about acceptances or rejections until the end of this month or later.

Regardless, I feel a little helpless....like I'm drifting on a tide somewhere with no destination in sight. At this point, I'm kinda ready to say fuck it (oooh, notice the lack of self censorship? yeah, I can't be bothered anymore) and just go sign up for one of those work/travel things because I've been looking at the programs for quite a bit and the itch to wander is starting to get to me. Most of these opportunities to be a vagabond have age requirements that have gotten me thinking...there's so much to do in life and so little time, do I really want to waste it locked down somewhere stuffy for years on end? I'm thinking of starting up dance classes and hitting the gym and picking up sports (old or new) and volunteering and going back to community college for certifications in technical stuff that would be useful for the career if the whole grad school thing doesn't work out but above and beyond that, I want to do something for myself. Something fun without it having to lead to anything. *sighs wistfully* I used to do that but I got so caught up in societies demands and the judgment and all that crap.....nothing is fun anymore.

Soooooooo, pole dancing classes anyone? Or maybe llama herding in Peru?

My bucket list is starting to come together and that damn movie might have a point after all.

Ahhh, memories. I'm so glad to have them...

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

was cleaning out the old blog and found many, many priceless gems from my college escapades. I crack myself up sometimes :D will have to post some here for old time's sake.

I was also watching my bellydance videos from my stint as an exotic dancer in the small retirement town of Novato, California and felt bad for myself...gosh, it was pretty darn bad in a cheesy sort of way. I mean, some of us have always been kinda iffy about the choreography that our troupe leader puts together but I never really realized how absolutely ridiculous some of the moves are. I do have to say that her veil work (what she's known for) is pretty kick ass but everything else made me want to meep and hide while watching it. And the costumes......oh gawd....in a troupe with mostly middle aged, overweight, white women....they were planned to hide stuff/blind ppl with reflective materials rather than reveal ...things...and it shows. I don't think I would try wearing the stuff for halloween which means that I have two fairly unusable costumes for home use.... hmmm.... perhaps, cleaning the house and rocking out to middle eastern songs might be combined? haha
embarrassing
I do have to say that I've got better control of my hips, isolations and butt now than I ever did back then :) maybe i'll return to the world of exotic dancing when I start earning enough money to pay for troupe rehearsals....I do kinda miss it alot.

seriously shady...

Saturday, March 6, 2010

so it's 2 am and there are some shady buggers parked right outside our driveway and talking really loudly (have been for a while too!). Oh, San Jose....you never cease to surprise me with how shady you can be. Don't take this the wrong way but our neighbourhood is mostly white and hispanic so the fact that black dudes might be dealing outside our house is kinda freaky. ummmm, hope they don't take the car. otherwise, we're screwed. lol. (I'm not being racist since i would still be suspicious if a bunch of asians/hispanics/caucasians/etc were practically hanging out on our front porch.)

okay, now that I'm done with that fun little bit of paranoia, racism and stereotyping, I'm moving on.

mmmm, back! yeah, it's been a while but I've been taken over by a writing frenzy and it hasn't stopped. Mostly it's been about all the traveling I've done in the last year or so but I've gone past 20 pages in the last few days and it doesn't look like I'll be stopping anytime soon. At this rate, I'll have a thesis or book by the end of the month. Will be posting bits and pieces of it up here so everyone can relive my memories of going round the world wit me :) and more food posts to come....half of which didn't quite turn out...oh well. laterz, i gotta go spy on the shady dealings from my unlit kitchen window. Yes, I'm one of those nosy aunties.

CNY is hard work......what have I committed myself to?

Thursday, February 11, 2010

I told myself (and everyone around me) that I would be ambitious and daring and bold for CNY. I'm planning to put together some treats in a bag for a couple of people I/we need to show gratitude to. So why not go all out and make everything from scratch? Yeah. It all looked so easy on paper and in my mind. lol. These last two days, I've embraced my inner auntie (although some people would suggest that my inner auntie likes to make appearances a regular thing) and made....

the young and the old

We got to see our new (first? second? ) cousin today :) She's sooooooooooooooooooo cute!! She's got that chubby asian baby thing going on and her poof of hair could give Donald Trump's (fake? real?) combover a run for its money. She was totally mellow and kept blowing raspberries which was cute in a slobbery way. We didn't get to hold her though since she spent most of the time sleeping :( But it was good to catch up with Mei Hsia and her family. We got to see the new house which has a great back yard and Anya is so much bigger now. I can't believe she's already 5! ...man, I remember when she was this tiny little wriggling bundle. Despite all the pink she wears (I think that might be her mom's doing), that kid is something of a tomboy.

The rest of the day was spent vegging out on the couch with my sis and watching painfully bad sitcoms (to me at least. I'm not a lover of sitcoms). But we did have something interesting happen - the cops knocked on our door a while ago. For a moment, my sis thought the neighbours had set them on us (although why she would think that is beyond me....we weren't home the whole day) and I guess they probably thought we set the cops on them....heh heh. I wish. But no. It turns out that a little old lady with Alzheimers two houses down went missing around 5pm (Charl thought they were talking about Flora for a moment but then was like, noo....we just heard her calling for her cats just now....). Anyway, regardless if it was a little old lady we knew or not, it's the kind of situation where you just go... Uh-oh. That is not good.

i wish we could help out but there isn't anything we can do that the cops aren't already doing. I hope they find her soon cos it's really cold and dark out now and that's kinda sad.

random thoughts on thursday

Friday, February 5, 2010

Hmm. Disney songs are an awesome way to brighten up a day :)

Also, I remembered the happy cow ad they had on tv a few months back and was wondering what had happened. So, google came to the rescue and clued me in.

It was basically an ad featuring "talking" cows from all over the world who were auditioning for a spot as the next real California happy cow (the catch phrase is that 'great cheese comes from happy [Californian] cows') in their search for greener pastures, love and the American dream. Utterly ridiculous but pretty entertaining. Well, apparently thousands of people voted (obviously because with the economy being what it is, loads of Californians have the spare time to vote for the importation of a cow) and while the South Korean cow, Soo, received more than 60, 000 votes, the Canadian cow, Kirsten won. Yay.

Go here to see Kirsten :)

But aside from the udder (haha, sorry that was lame) cow mania (interviews, wallpapers of your fav cow and even the option of buying a painting from California's premier cow painter), they have some pretty good info about buying local milk and cheese. Random but interesting.

Gonna start the cny cooking medley but the list is still pretty tentative. The thing that I'm really excited about making is kuih kapit since I wanna try out my moulds. The only glitch in that plan is that to make em the traditional way, I need charcoal and a grill but it's been raining and whatnot :( Hopefully it stops soon and I can see if making them is really worth the trouble.

Here's to another rainy Thursday.

The continuous rant about the neighbours...

Monday, February 1, 2010

I'm really pissed off with the neighbours right now. We totally thought (prayed, wished, hoped) that they had moved out since we hadn't been hearing very much from them the last few weeks (although my sis says she's heard them) but alas, it is not so. The dude is playing really loud clubbing/heavy metal music that I can hear from the living room (so through two walls and a door). It's so loud that I can hear it from inside the car which is parked on the street. We've talked to them before when it got too loud for too long in the middle of the week (til 4 am on a tuesday night/wed morning) and they said they understood and were ....fairly apologetic at the time.

Mooncakes

Baked mini red bean mooncakes

I'm not going to bother going into details about the origin of the mooncake festival and all that - I'm just going to assume that most people looking for a mooncake recipe already know some of the background and everyone else can google it. But I will tell you that I absolutely love mooncakes, especially the ones from home. There's so much variety (regular, ping pei, jelly, etc) and so many awesome flavours (pandan, coffee, durian, mixed nuts, etc)! Yum! I haven't been able to get my hands on the stuff from home and I don't really like the taste of the ones in US so I got a book and some plastic moulds the last time I went back and tested them out last year during the festival. I have to say that they're actually really easy to make if done in stages or if you cheat like I did :) Broken down, a mooncake is basically the skin (including a basic sugar syrup) and the filling.
